Learning Objectives:

  • How do I closely read a text to analyze an author's use of diction to portray a character?
  • What is the best way to revise writing by adding figurative language?

Today we'll read Chapter 22.  Tonight and tomorrow night - Read 23-25.

  • Three DEJ Entries: Figurative Language

Warm-Up:1. Check Homework (Reflection on Discussions)

2.  We've learned that diction is the choice of words an author uses in order to develop character, voice and tone.
Class Notebook: 4/12: "Diction Detective"

  • Create a little half-page graphic organizer like the one below and find words and phrases that each character uses to convey their unique voice.
3. In your group of three:
  • Get a computer and logon to SBD.

  • Go to Activity 2.9.
    • One person will create a sticky with all THREE names on it.

    4. Read Chapter 22 together (silently or softly aloud)
      • Look for words, phrases and passages that show clues about why Creech chose specific words.
        • What was she trying to show or achieve?
        • Find words, phrases and passages that are interesting, descriptive or even confusing.
        • Analyze them using the graphic organizer (#2).
    5.  Each person in the group should choose a different word or phrase.
    • Write the word/phrase on one side of a notecard
    • Write your analysis on the other.

    6. Walk around and "share" your word or phrase with others in the room.

    7. Look at how the word "malinger" comes up in conversation between Phoebe and her father.
    • Underline the context clues that could have helped Phoebe understand the word without looking it up in the dictionary.

    8. What context clues in Chapter 22 help you understand the words frenzy, cardigan, skittish and sullen?

    Closing:
    9. Review the three types of figurative language that we've been discussing this year:
    • Simile
    • Metaphor
    • Personification
What is the definition of each?

Tonight - Skim back through some of your DEJ and/or the book.
    • Locate at least THREE passages that contain figurative language and write your favorite on an index card.
    • Write an explanation of why Creech uses the figurative language at that moment.  What ideas does the figurative language convey?
    • Also write about why you found it so interesting.
