Lesson Objectives:
I can…
  • review apostrophes' use and apply to writing
  • determine the definition and use of "adjectives out of order"
  • determine mistakes made and corrections possible
  • review reading STAAR Simulation

Opening:
1. Review all the "S" endings you found in your paper?

  • which are plural nouns? (kids, cars, chairs, etc.)
  • which are singular verbs? (walks, springs, points, etc.)
  • which are possessives (Bob's car, Dad's boots, etc.)
  • which are contractions (what's mine? how's life? etc.)
2. Edit your final draft to avoid errors.
  • Trust me, they add up and can hurt your score!

Work Period:
3. Spot Check Journal: At least Two brush stroke sentences -

  • Chris van Allsburg
  • STAAR Simulation Narrative
4. Copy this sentence:
  • Staring at the door, fingers crossing, phone resting in my lap, I am waiting for my mother, a late shift waitress, to be arriving home.
5. Fix it up so that you eliminate any -ing endings that aren't participles or absolutes.

6. What is an "Adjectives Out-of-Order" brush stroke?
  • Read through page 21 and define the brush stroke.
7. On page 22, what adjectives describe the kitten and the dog?  Name six for each (try a thesaurus!)

8. Complete Description 1 on page 23 using your adjectives.

Closing:
9. Review Passage One of the Reading Simulation.

Homework: Write a second sentence, but with the dog as the subject of the sentence, instead of the cat.
