Use the text to discuss:
  • Why is the poem titled "New Moon"?
  • What is the author's tone?
2. Share your words and phrases for "teacher"

3. Share the "controlling idea" in your narrative essay

4. Why use a "renaming" strategy like this in an essay?

Work Period:
5.  Read Aloud the "4" essay.

  • What makes a "4" expository essay?

6. Examine the "3" - what was lost, and what remained?

  • Of what you highlighted, what was removed (highlight with another color)

7.  Follow the same process for the 2 and 1.  

  • What happened?  
  • What remained?  
  • What was lost?
8. In your classroom journal, reflect on what you learned from the "devolution" process.

Closing:
9. Gallery Walk the Expository Essays around the room.  
  • "Notice" strengths in the essay you read.
  • Post what you "notice" on a sticky-note.
