Opening:

1. Share your narrative about a significance choice with a partner.

2. Introduce "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes" - this is a Novel Excerpt.  What does that mean?

3. Share Reading of the text.

Work Period:

4. Work in small groups and complete the following:
Chunk 1: Feelings about Baseball:
  • Mark the text by highlighting or underlining words in the first three paragraphs that indicate how the narrator feels about playing baseball.
  • Summarize the narrator's feelings about baseball in the "My Notes" section on page 11.
Chunk 2: Choices and Predictions
  • Write in the "My Notes" section the CHOICE made by each of the three characters in the scene
    • Coach
    • Ronnie Callendar
    • Cindy
Chunk 3: Feelings about Choice
  • Mark the WORDS that show how the narrator feels
  • Circle the choices she makes during the rest of the season.
  • Write a REACTION to the narrator's choices in the "My Notes" section

Closing:

5. Discussion:
  • What do we know about the narrator after this close reading?
  • What is the decision from each character's perspective?
  • Who controls the choices made?
  • How do people make choices internally, as well as externally?
