Opening:

1. Share analytical paragraphs in small groups

2. On SpringBoard page 71, Remind students about the following definitions:
  • Symbolism
  • Literature meaning
  • Figurative meaning
3. Copy all three definitions into your class journal


Work Period:

4. Answer Question #1 on page 71
  • what is the intended meaning?  
    • I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.
    • It's raining cats and dogs.
    • She broke my heart.
5. Examine some advertisements for symbolism.
  • The Razor = 
  • The Corolla = 
  • The Volt = 
  • The Headphones = 

6. Answer #2 - what objects are used literally in the stories we've read so far?
  • "The Raven and the Sources of Light"
  • "A Single Shard"
  • "Icarus and Daedalus"
  • "Phaethon"
7. What are the figurative meanings of some of those objects?

8. Complete the Symbolism graphic organizer on page 72.  Use the other symbols we've considered for the last two rows.

9. Draw a scene from one of the stories we've read.

  • Create a scene so that the OBJECT is shown as a significant symbol.
  • Communicate the figurative, or symbolic, meaning of this object
