Independent Reading Logs Due at the beginning of class...as I stamp them, please share your reading experience this previous week.

Opening:

1. Quickwrite:  Describe the sequence of events that occurs after Phaethon takes the reigns to the Chariot of the Sun.
  • What happens when the chariot comes to close to the earth?
  • What results when the chariot drives too far from the earth?
  • What are the consequences of the chariot returning back toward earth after that?
  • How does Zeus intervene?
  • What are the lasting consequences, or "natural phenomenon," explained in paragraphs 77 and 78?
2. What character traits do Apollo and Phaethon exhibit in the story?

3. Discuss the textual evidence you highlighted on page 70 for the traits given.

4. Independently, write a single paragraph in which you do the following:
  • Copy the topic sentence you feel you can best prove and explain
  • Provide the evidence by stating one of the following:

    • Bernard Evslin writes, "..." (#)
  • Use two sentences to explain your evidence and how the evidence proves the character traits
    • Connect text to evidence in your own words
    • Help your reader understand why your evidence proves your point
5. Share in small groups

6. On SpringBoard page 71, Remind students about the following definitions:
  • Symbolism
  • Literature meaning
  • Figurative meaning
7. Copy all three definitions into your class journal
