Learning Objectives:

  • How do I make inferences and predictions about character change?
  • How do I apply understanding of plot and subplot to a discussion of a novel?

Tonight: Read 16 - 17.  One new DEJ.

Warm-Up:
1. Share your responses from your DEJ about Chapters 11-15.

2. What seems important in this set of chapters?

Work Period:
3. Using the back of your handout from last week, review the following:

What can you infer or predict about one girl's internal changes/growth?
Group A: Sal
Group B: Phoebe
  • What are the most significant events in the girl's Physical and Emotional Journey?
    • What are the most significant character traits of the girl's parents?
      • Who else seems important in her story?  Why?
      • What do you predict or infer from these events and these characters?

4. Class Notebook: 4/4: Physical and Emotional Journeys (Everyone: Respond to A and B)
  • Consider Phoebe and Sal's Emotional Journeys -
  • A. Summarize the predictions and inferences you have about Sal's emotional journey.
  • B. Do you think Phoebe is on an emotional journey of any kind?  What does her future hold?  What is the basis of your prediction?

5. Class Notebook: 4/4: Subplots
Create a bullet list:
  • Gram and Gramps
    • What is their timeline together?  Do they have a plot?
    • Can we call this a "subplot"?
  • What other subplots are there?
    • Phoebe?
    • Ben and Sal?
    • The Lunatic?
    • Life in Kentucky?
    • The Road Trip?
      • Confusing, right?

6. Make sure you have answered #4 on the handout from last week.
  • In Literary Analysis, it is NOT so much about the right answer as it is about providing an opinion on a topic and supporting it with various pieces of textual evidence that combine to create your opinion.

Closing:
7. Under all of the notes you've taken for "Physical and Emotional Journeys" and Subplots, create a graphic organizer or thinking map that helps you analyze and explore the concepts of Plot and Subplot.
