Learning Objective and Key Questions:
  • What is the best way to preview a novel?
  • How can I use a Double-Entry Journal to record my responses to a novel?

Please have your Independent Reading on your desk/table so that I can review it throughout the class period.


Opening:
1.  At the end of the period, you will turn in your notebook to me.

2. Tell me what you saw when you examined the cover: 

  • Title 
  • Author
  • Picture
  • Words
  • First Pages


Work Period:
3. Set up a Double Entry Journal.

  • Connection: How do you personally relate to a passage from the novel?
  • Opinion: What do you personally think about something happening in the novel?
  • Question: What questions do you have about what is happening in the novel?
4. ReRead Chapter One Aloud.

5. With a partner, share the passage you are interested in, as well as your sticky note.  

6. Copy the passage into your DEJ, along with the page number and your response.
