Learning Objectives:
  • What is an easy way to preview a unit of study?
    • What key skills and knowledge will I need to learn to be successful on the next Embedded Assessment?
    • What are the vocabulary and genres associated with this unit?

    Opening:Reminder: Reading Logs and Projects/Entries are due Thursday.

    1. With your seat partner, login to SpringBoard Digital and go to the Unit Opener.

    2. View the image, create a sticky note and respond to the writing prompt.

    3. Turn to Activity 2.1 and answer the two essential questions.


    Work Period:4. Share aloud, then go backward into the Table of Contents.  What do you notice?  What genres and activities will we be doing during this unit of study?


    5. Read the Unit Overview, highlighting big ideas.

    6. Preview the vocabulary.
    Highlight the vocabulary as follows:
    • Red - Questions...New Vocabulary
    • Yellow - Heard of It, but still hard to explain
    • Green - Know it, Can Teach it
    Class Notebook: 3/7 - Previewing the Unit
    • QHT Word Wall - Create a chart that documents your personal understanding of the vocabulary for the unit.

    8. Read through the prompt for the Embedded Assessment.  Mark the text
    • Circle Verbs (Skills)
    • Underline Nouns and Phrases (Knowledge)
    Class Notebook: Create a Web of this EA.  What are the four prompts?
    • Consult the Scoring Guide in the EA.
    • What does every essay require for success?
      • Ideas
      • Structure
      • Use of Language
    Closing:9. Review the Embedded Assessment and summarize the assignment with your partner online.  Use the area provided in Activity 2.1.

    10.  If time allows: Go to Activity 2.2

    11. respond to #1 in the new Activity.

    12. View clips from UP! and take notes online as we view.
