Learning Objectives:
I can…

  • examine how choices define a character
  • understand chronological order
  • recognize and use transitions that indicate time order

Opening:

1. Copy Tone and the definition into your Journal.

2. Review Definition, then Copy down a sentence in the story that really captures the attitude the speaker has toward one of the following subjects:

  • the sow-hog
  • her mother
  • walking
3. Determine what you feel is the tone of the sentence, and practice reading the sentence with that tone.

4. Explain what the tone of the sentence does to the meaning of the text.

Work Period:

5. Pair up and discuss your responses to the Quickwrites on page 18.

6. As we read, do the following:

  • How do authors create realistic characters?  As we read "A Hundred Bucks of Happy," take notes on the narrator in the "My Notes" section.
  • What do the choices of the narrator reveal about this character? Highlight the choices the character makes throughout the narrative. (Look for eight choices)
Closing:
7.  In your small group, review the choices that the narrator makes.  Orally retell the sequence of events - so far.
  • Use transitional words from the poster to retell the sequence of events.
