Learning Objectives:

  • To review key elements of characterization and apply it to Greek Gods
  • To understand each Greek God's role or responsibility
  • To recognize the connections between myths of various cultures
Opening:
1. Share characterization definition - ensure the definition is in your class journal.

2. Discuss the following quotations from page 49 (Check HW):
  • "Was it stealing, to wait as Tree-ear had for more rice to fall before alerting the man that his rice bag was leaking?" (47)
  • "Did a good deed balance a bad one?" (47)
  • Scholars read the great words of the world.  But you and I must learn to read the world itself."(48).
3. Introduction to the Greek Gods (page 50)
  • Fill in as many as you can in FIVE minutes.
    • Roles and Responsibilities (what is their role in Greek culture?  In what situations would an ancient Greek pray or make an offering to each god?
    • Related God in Roman, Norse, or Egyptian myth
4. Review the Gods listed.

5. Set-up the classwork assignment:
  • Product: A Wanted - or Missing - Poster for one of the gods or goddesses.
    • This will require work at home
    • Due Wednesday at the beginning of class
    • Use the textual prompts at the bottom of 51 - but other information may be included.
    • Don't make the poster TOO BUSY
    • Illustration must be colored.

  • Take notes on page 51.
